Two Step - Shoulder Catch

In this lesson, Anthony and Rose teach the Shoulder Catch—a slick, stylish variation that builds directly off moves dancers already know. If you’ve learned the basic step, the right and left turns, and the Sweetheart, then congratulations—you’ve already done 90% of the work. Taught using the Horizontal Approach to Two Step, this pattern doesn’t add complexity just for the sake of it. Instead, it repurposes the same core turn mechanics in a new way by simply changing the exit. Instead of catching the follower in promenade or sweetheart position, the leader “catches” her shoulder after a right turn, creating a dynamic shape that opens up even more movement possibilities. Anthony emphasizes how this approach to Two Step lets dancers become more versatile without having to memorize dozens of separate patterns. With the right connection, prep, and timing, the Shoulder Catch feels intuitive and looks impressive. This lesson reinforces that dancing isn’t about stacking moves on top of each other—it's about learning how to use the tools you’ve already got. By the end, dancers will feel more confident linking familiar turns into creative combinations that flow naturally on the floor.
